If you have a garage then you have probably considered garage shelving. Because there is usually so much under-utilized space in your garage, you may need to put that extra space to good use. Or perhaps you're the type of person who has so much stuff cluttering up your garage that you need to find some way to organize it all. A shelving system specifically designed for organizing everything from tools to winter clothing may be just what you need. Shelves may be a first step in your battle to get things organized and tidy. A shelving system built or installed in your garage will help to keep clutter to a minimum and organize any items that just seem to get lost frequently. If your baseball bat, box fan, or those special antique trading cards go missing from their designated spot on the shelf, you know immediately that these items are missing. Shelves do one thing very well - they make a specific place for specific things. We have all made plans to get that garage well organized, but it seems like such a huge chore. You know you need to get organized so make the decision and get started. With storage shelves in your garage, you are able to easily designate a spot for the important things that you need to be able to find quickly. When clearing out all of that stuff, put all the items in one of six different piles. Things to keep, throw out, donate, sell, repair, and things that need to be stored somewhere besides the garage. Next, determine just how much space you're going to need for your shelves. This would also be a good time to decide whether you want to add any garage cabinets into the space. The main thing to keep in mind here is what your specific needs for storage and organization will be. If you have a lot of little items like small tools, nails and screws, or craft supplies, you may need to consider a shelving unit that is able to accommodate lots of cubbys or spaces for smaller items.

Garage Shelving Provides for Optimum Organization

Once you have figured how much space will be needed and what your specific storage needs are going to be, it's time to do a rough design. If you park cars in your garage and you need all that lower space for vehicles, then most of your shelves and storage will be placed high, perhaps secured to the ceiling. Maybe your configuration will need to fit into a specific area between a hot water heater and an interior wall. Perhaps you need to store a large number of books. Shelves are the perfect solution to any space regardless of the limitations of size, shape, or configuration. One of the hardest things to do when installing shelves in your garage is choosing the right style of shelf and what material best suits your particular needs. For example, if you live in a very humid or damp climate, then wood shelving might not be the best building material. If you have a lot of very heavy items, then you may need to consider only heavy-duty steel shelves. Before you begin construction, carefully consider the purpose of the shelving in regard to total weight of the items, ease of access, and overall best use of the available space. Of course, cost will always be a consideration. Prices range from the very cheap to ridiculously expensive, so be sure to keep this in mind.

Garage Shelving Design

The old pegboard and metal hooks in your dad's garage are so primitive compared to the super-efficient garage organizers of today. You can find a garage space organizer for just about anything. Bicycle hangers, brackets for your wheelbarrow, ceiling shelves, racks for garden equipment and garden hoses - just about anything you can think of. The main thing all of these garage storage organizers have in common is to make better use of the available space. Most of these storage devices will store things very close to a wall, or up against the ceiling. Most storage systems for your garage are designed to leave the most amount of space for vehicles. Garage storage systems are available in just about any size, material, design configuration, and price range imaginable. Do your research, prepare ahead of time, and you'll end up with the garage shelving that works best for you.
